minutesA friend gave me this recipe years ago when my sone was a baby. I never had had a Sloppy Joe as a kid and had always heard about them. I make this recipe every once in awhile usually when we are headed out on a date night. My kid’s love it and their friends love it. I find it works best with the a pretzel bun or brioche bun. This recipe is easy and delicious. You can really be flexible and if you prefer use turkey meat instead. You can make it less sweet and more savory with added Dijon or add some red pepper flakes or a few drops of your favorite hot sauce. I always serve this with green beans or broccolini. This is a easy dish to make for kids and if you want to make the day before just reheat adding a little more apple juice or apple cider vinegar.
Ingredients
2 lb ground beef, turkey or pork
1 1/2 cups ketchup
5 Tablespoons light brown sugar
3 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 1/2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
2 cup unsweetened apple juice
2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon ground fresh pepper
4 burger buns
Directions
- In a saucepan large enough to hold all the meat, set over medium heat, add the beef and cook, stirring occasionally until the beef is browned and cooked through about 10 minutes.
- Add ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and mustard, reduce the heat to medium low and stir occasionally for 20 minutes. Pour in the apple juice, you may only need 1 1/2-1 3/4 cups and stir to combine. Cook, stirring occasionally, until liquid is reduced by half, about 20-25 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
- Serve on heated buns, cut in half, spoon some of the Sloppy Hugo and cover with top of bun. Enjoy hot.
