I love to hike and I especially like day hikes. I like to start first thing in the morning and be home by early afternoon. I like the trails quiet and I love to enjoy the beauty and vastness around me without tons of traffic. I love nuts and I love some dried fruit (some can be too sweet).
I like to make my own trail mix and my kids like to help. We make different versions: Power mix, Gorp, Kid mix, Energy mix and so on. I like to mix up the nuts I use, some raw, some roasted, some salted and roasted. I like all nuts but tend to focus on:
- Almonds, Cashews, Peanuts, Walnuts and pumpkin seeds
- Dried fruits: apples, mangos, papaya, banana chips, raisins, dried cranberries, dried blueberries and dried kiwi
- Dark chocolate chips, peanut butter chips and chocolate covered nuts/raisins
Some of my kid’s favorite additions to trail mix are:
- Yogurt covered raisins
- chocolate covered fruit: berries or/and raisins
- Mini Pretzels
- Reeces Pieces
- Honey Nut Cherrios
- Life
- Granola
- Freeze dried berries
- Licorice
When making your own trail mix, you can toast the nuts, add Himalayan salt, season the nuts with your favorite seasonings or spices. get creative. I would only warn against dried fruit, don’t buy dried fruit that is sweetened as dried fruit doesn’t need to be sweetened as it is sweet enough.
