I grew up loving Scrabble, Clue, Uno, Monopoly, and card games like BS and 21. Scrabble was a favorite Binky and she was the one who turned me onto game nights. When I lived with her for 2 years after college and I had my own catering company. On my free evenings, my grandmother would have a couple friends over and they would eat, drink and be merry playing Scrabble. They would get heated sometimes as my grandmother was a very strict grammarian. I love the game and try and play as much as I can.
If you want to host a fun game night, you can make it a fun cocktail party or keep it intimate and have one or two people over. When we did it in Wyoming, we would just have enough people to play the game. Scrabble needs 2-4 players so we always has 2 people over, either a couple or friends. Sometimes they would bring food, such as a stir fry or bring over a duck they shot and we would prepare the food and while it cooked, we drank and played.
Sometimes, it was fun when each person brought an hors d’oeuvres and we would play Scrabble drinking and nibbling. It was always fun and very lively.
In college, we would host game night and play Clue, Taboo, Outburst, Scattergories, Twister, or Trivia Pursuit. We would always have a themed cocktail and everybody brought their favorite snack. This was nothing fancy but we had fun and listened to great music. It helped that I had a disco ball in my room which was so cool.
These parties can be so much fun especially when you include the kids. You can have teams and kids can go against parents and the foods can be fun finger foods for both adults and kids. When we have put these on in Wyoming, I usually make my calzone which feeds a lot of people. It is delicious and quite hearty. I fill it with smoked turkey and fennel salami, provolone cheese, spinach, roasted red peppers and sometimes roasted eggplant. It isn’t the most glam pizza, but it is filling and everyone seems to love it.
